The Descent into Hell When Jesus Christ died, his body remained in the tomb and his soul descended to hell. While In hell as we can see in the Descent into Hell icon, Jesus is seen with souls of people who had died before. He is the center of attention, we can see people trying to reach out their hands to him because they take him as their savior and they are all coming to him for redemption.
Jesus went to hell to preach the Gospel as he used to do before he was killed. This was an opportunity for the souls in hell to repent and have their sins forgiven so that they can enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The souls are for people who died before Jesus Christ and are waiting for their Judgment.
The cross is where Jesus died from.
