thrown into jail for speaking negatively about the war effort, so much so that almost anybody was sent to jail for having any negative opinion about the government. Civil liberties like the protection of the due process of the law protect innocent people until they are proven guilty in the court of law and it is important to us because this stops people like the government from just throwing anybody they don't like into jail to get rid of them. Civil liberties in short are a nifty little way of stopping our government from making the same mistakes past governments have made in denying people their rights and ensuring a way that our rights can never be threatened by anybody. On the fateful day of September 11, 2001 our government yet again out of fear began to suppress our civil liberties in the name of national security. The most threatened of civil liberties was the freedom of speech and was going through a time of suppression much like how it did during WW1.
