Many books have been made into movies and the Devil’s arithmetic is just one. This story takes you on a journey to the 1940’s when World War one was taking place as well as the holocaust and all of the horrors that follow. Hannah is forced to remember thing that she could never imagine happening to her and her family. Though there are many differences between the book and the movie, I will only be discussing some of them. From the book The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen and the movie made in the year 1999. Hannah Stern comes from a long line of the Jewish culture. She is growing up in a town in New York called New Rochelle. It is time for the Jewish holiday called Passover. Passover in the christian faith is known as Easter. For Hannah’s families passover they all gather at her grandparents house. One difference is Aaron Hanna’s little brother is in the book but not the movie. He hides the afikoman and also reads the four questions from the Haggadah. In the movie no one reads the questions or hides the afikoman. Another way the movie is different is when Hannah walks into her grandparents house aunt Eva greets Hannah with a kiss on the forehead and leaves a lipstick mark. Hannah tries to remove it but is unsuccessful. When Hannah is transported back in time she meets Rivka but not in the same way. In the book Hannah meets her at the camp and in the movie they are cousins. Rivka and Hannah also go about the town that Rivka’s house is in and get their picture taken. In the book they go to the wedding and get ready. The ceremony part of the wedding is not told in the book. They are walking through the town and the soldiers are already in the square.
