“The Devil’s Arithmetic” is about remembering. Everything that happened in the past, we have to remember so they don’t happen again. Even though they are telling the same story, they have some very big differences. In the book “The Devil’s Arithmetic”, it has so much detail and the plot is really clear. In the movie, I feel that the relationships were very confusing after reading the book and many of the major events were different. This book and movie are about a girl named Hannah. Her family is Jewish and they are practice all Jewish holidays with her Aunt Eva, who named Hannah after her friend who died in a camp in the Holocaust. Hannah doesn’t even want to go to the Seder because she doesn’t care about remembering. She thinks because it’s in the past, it’s already happened, it doesn’t matter anymore. They both focus on remembering. They show that we have to remember the past so it doesn’t repeat itself. The whole purpose of Hannah going back to live in the concentration camp was that so she would realize how big of a deal it was and why she has to remember. Before, she was snotty and didn’t care about the past because it didn’t affect her. It already happened! But she got sent back, and when she came back she was humbled and she appreciated how much Aunt Eva went through. Another thing that was the same was the suffering. In both the movie and the book, so many people suffered. The people who were shot, hung, and gassed, they all suffered. They had hardly anything to eat and they had to work with no breaks and if they did, they might have gotten shot. Everyone in the camps suffered. Lastly, one of the major similarities, Hannah took Rivka’s place both times. Hannah knew that Rivka had to live because she was going to be an aunt someday to the actual Hannah. She didn’t care that she was dying, she cared about Rivka
