The doctor is a drama film directed by Randa Haines, the movie was released July 24, 1991 and is based on the 1988 autobiography of Dr, Edward E Rosenbaum tilted “ A Taste of My Own Medicine”. The drama stars William Hurt as “ Dr. Jack Mckee” a successful cardiovascular surgeon whose views on life, relationship, patient care, family changed due to his cancer diagnosis. Dr. Mckee life experience and altitude is based on his achievement in the medical field, which therefore hindered his foresight in understanding psychosocial aspect of life. The movie entails personal hurdles, he encountered during his treatment, and how he metamorphose into a completely different physician who empathize with patient’s struggle, which thereby made home to develop …show more content…
However, he is an unusual humorous surgeon who treats his patients based on volume and disease state. He describes his work to his residents and fellows “ as a surgeon the only we do is to CUT, FIX and CLOSE” insinuating that he doesn’t need to know his patient but rather understand his the patient condition, try to fix it and then leave. Apart from his work, his relationship with his wife and children is almost non-existent. The patient started experiencing symptoms after a charity event in which he started coughing out blood. His wife advised him to get it checked out, which he did at his current hospital. He was informed by his fellow physician of an abnormal tissue growth which requires a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. His reaction to the diagnosis by the doctor was really surprising to him, he taught he probably misheard the physician words, and asked the physician to repeat the sentence again, he was completely perplexed. Upon hearing this he went home drunk, feeling really sad and mad. His wife approached him to understand this usual behavior, which made him to completely ignore his kids, and staying really up despite the fact that he has medical duties the following morning.
