The Dred Scott Decision

I woke up to a beautiful morning. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping. I thought today would be an amazing day. Then, my mind came back to reality: I had been freed but my owner appealed the decision and the court didn’t give me a second chance at freedom. Today I was taking my case to the U.S Supreme Court, the highest court in the land. I was nervous about what the judges would do to my case. Would they actually say yes? Would they reject it? All these thoughts rushed through my mind. Well, I had no time to question it.

In 2 days I was expected at the Supreme Court. I put on my best clothes and started to go towards a saddled horse. I climbed onto the horse and a few seconds later we were off. After a few hours of riding, I started to see

I rode a little more and I eventually hit a large building with the words “SUPREME COURT” carved at the top. I didn’t know what it meant or how to read it but I imagined it was the Supreme Court because Eliza’s carriage was parked at the side of the towering building. I tied the horse to a post and started towards the court. I walked up to the doors, took a deep breath and opened the doors.

Once the doors opened the whole court, which was full of chatter, stopped, everyone and everything went silent. I could hear people whispering. I walked up to the judges, and the trial began. After hours of arguing in the court they finally decided that I will not be freed. They told me not to come back to this court again. Then, they kicked me out.

A few months later Eliza married a doctor who was against slavery. The man encouraged her to free her slaves and go against slavery. So Eliza sold me to the descendants of my original owner: Peter Blow. The Blow family freed me soon after!! A free man at last I went to work at a hotel in St. Louis. I didn’t have much time to enjoy my freedom though. I hope some day, my memory will hold in American
