In the narrative The Pardoner’s Tale, Geoffrey Chaucer focuses on the effects of greed. More specifically, he tells a tale about three men who venture to kill death but end up dead themselves. Chauncer writes, “If it be your design to find out Death” … “I left him there today under a tree, and there you’ll find him waiting.” (182-185) These were the words of an old man that informed the three men who had strayed from the rest of the group at the tavern. Instead of death, it was coins they found! All three brutes, excited about their new riches, began to want more for themselves. So one man was sent to get food while the other two secretly plotted to kill him when he came back. Little did they know the one man also had a trick up his sleeve.
