1. Describe the mood of the engagement part, at the very start of the play.
A. At the rise of the curtain we are introduced to the beginning of a pleasant celebration. The Birling’s are all super ecstatic to receive the announcement about the engagement of their daughter Sheila and Gerald Croft, a young man of higher class. “Well, well- this is very nice. Very nice. Good dinner to Sybil…” said Mr. Birling, explaining to us that he is very pleased with this arrangement. I think the Birling family have every right to enjoy this arrangement because their daughter is marrying a man of higher class, or in other words, wealthier. Arthur Birling is a very respectable man in society. However, sometimes he can say some irrational things such as: During his large speech to Gerald and Eric, he mentions that the Titanic was unsinkable but the large iceberg that sunk the entire ship proved him wrong. There were also two other false facts he stated during his speech, “Russia will not progress and be behind every other country” and “Germany does not want war and that there will be peace and prosperity everywhere.” Mr. Birling obviously sounds foolish and arrogant because future events proved his beliefs wrong.
5. How does the atmosphere in the dining room change, after the Inspector enters?
A. Before the inspector enters the room the environment is very relaxed and content. They are all enjoying a few drinks to celebrate this wonderful engagement. As soon as the inspector entered and explained the crisis to the Birling family, the mood of the evening changed abruptly. “we were having a nice family celebration. And a nasty mess you’ve made of it now, haven’t you.” Quoted Mr. Birling. Mr. Birling is obviously blaming the inspector’s interrogation as the reason why everyone is so uptight all of a sudden.
