The Epic of Gilgamesh is considered the oldest piece of literature in the world, dating back further than the Bible. The tale began as a sequence of poems about Sumerian fables written in cuneiform and eventually were turned into the version that historians know today; a long Akkadian story which is preserved on 11 clay tablets. The story told throughout the pieces of clay is the adventure of Gilgamesh, otherwise known as King of Uruk. The prelude to the story describes Gilgamesh as god-like with a physically elegant frame. Though he was beautiful and intelligent, his reign was relentless. He forced labor and drained his people, treating them as if they were slaves. His people begged and prayed to the Gods to relieve them of Gilgamesh’s cruelty.
