A World of Madnesss The Fall of the House of Usher and House Taken Over are two short stories that were written by two different people at drastically different times. These two narratives have many similarities yet many differences. They each have different messages that they try to get across to the reader but still both stories can be compared. The Fall of the House of Usher is a story in which the narrator receives a letter from his boon companion, Roderick, and decides to visit him. Upon arrival the house seems different, unlike how it was when he was younger. For instance, in the story it says,”an utter depression of soul, which I can compare to no earthly sensation”(Poe 14). Then, he enters the house and the butler leads him to where his old friend is. They began to talk and Roderick explains to the narrator how he and his sister are sick. Later, they mistakenly believe Madeline is dead, so they place her in the basement as a temporary burial. …show more content…
For example, in The Fall of the House of Usher the sister, Madeline, dies but in House Taken Over the sister doesn’t. Another difference that can be found is how Roderick and Madeline's house gets completely destroyed, while Irene and her brother’s house doesn’t. They just get kicked out, but the house is still intact. In addition, another difference is the fact that in House Taken Over they constantly clean and tidy up the house, while in The Fall of the House of Usher it is the complete opposite. The house is very messy with used needles and trash thrown all over the floor.

In conclusion, House Taken Over and The Fall of the House of Usher have many things in common that can be found throughout the story, yet many differences that make each story unique in its own way. Both narratives are great examples of gothic literature and interesting to
