The “The Famished Road”, by Ben Okri was very mind blowing. The author used magical realism to the best of his potential, which also seems to be one of his strength. Magical realism not only implies that one can create as many fantasies as they like, but they can also portray imageries that they want their audience to see. In Ben Okri case, he seems to be portraying a connection between the spiritual realm and the real world. In the beginning of the passage it mentions “ One moment I was in the room and the next moment I found myself wandering the night roads. I had no idea how I had gotten outside. I walked on dissolving streets and amongst terrestrials bushes”. It was given that the main character was dreaming or having an out of Body experience. The author also mentioned a beautiful woman he was following, with a blue head an amazing smile and such grace kept calling him. It was interesting that when the character mother found him, she wanted to know what he was doing out in the wilderness. It was clear to me that the author’s greatest strength was fiction writing. What appeals to me about the author is her style and erudition, in her short story. The author seems to intertwine light and darkness of human experiences. The character, which ultimately becomes stone, was at the lowest point in her life because of the mother’s sudden death. I felt such pity for the character because no one would ever like to be in that position, it definitely can turn you into a stone woman. The story is full of wonderful evocative descriptions. The ‘white face’ and ‘white pillow’ of her mother’s laying out, contrast with the “efficient rage” of the fire in which she destroys some of her possessions.
