The first myth that Stephanie Coontz debunks is that all families are nuclear, with a husband, wife, and kids. There are many types of families, many that are nothing like a nuclear family. The second myth is that families can do everything for themselves and do not need any outside help. In reality we all need help at some point and we cannot do everything on our own. The third myth is that men and women play a certain role in the family, such as women doing all of the cooking and cleaning and me doing all of the yard work. In reality, men and women often share these jobs. The fourth and final myth is the myth of the perfect 1950’s nuclear family. No family is perfect. All families have some dysfunction, some minor and others major.
