The Muslims and Christians have been rivalries for centuries. They have had numerous conflicts and wars in the history. At the time of 8th century, the Latin civilizations were already weakened by the expanding Muslim influence: during that time, Spain was controlled by the Muslims and part of Byzantine territory was taken by the Muslims. This unfavorable situation was desired to be changed by the European authority and people. Then, Pope Urban II, the Pope of the Papacy, started the First Crusade in 1096.
