Wednesday December 12th 2012 John Proctor vs Abigail Williams The town of Salem has many to blame for the tragedy that occured. John Proctor and Abigail Williams are tow of the people who contributed to the tragedy that occured in Salem. John Proctor and Abigail Willams are similiar for the following reasons :they both care about their reputation in the otwn of Salem. They both have an affair with each other. Proctor and Abigail are different in many ways too. Abigail lies constantly to the whole town of Salem about witchcraft whereas John tells the truth eventually. John is a dynamic character because, he changed during the progression of the play. John had an affair with Abigail and at the end he learns from his mistakes, unlike Abigail who is a liar throughout the whole story. John and Abigail might have their differances and similarities but their actions caused the tragedy in Salem, but their motivations are vastly different.

John Proctor and Abigail Willams have many similarites. John and Abigail were having an affair, which motivated Abigail to start the Salem witch trials. Abigail loves John even though he has a wife. '' You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John proctors wife!you drank a charm to kill goody Proctor''(miller 19).Abigail was so inlove with John that she went to the forest with the girls so they could dance around a fire, hoping she could use a charm to kill goody Proctor. Abigail lusted for John which didnt make her think straightShe loves him and cannot be with John if his wife is alive. In the same way, John had an affair with Abigail making her fall in love with him.''John- grant me this. You have faulty understanding of young girls. There is a promise made in every bed (miller 61). Abigail love John after them having an affair. John had an affair with Abigail, then leaving her for his wife, left Abigail thinking that Elizabeth is the one stopping them forn being together. Therefore, Abigail wanted das 2
Elizabeth dead so she can be with John. Abigail has strong feelings for John. These feelings for John lead to the decisions she makes. John and Abigail both care about their reputations, however, in different ways. John tells the truth to keep his good name and Abigail lies to keep and protect her good name.Abigail lies to keep her good name and to get Elizabeth in jail. John tells the truth willing to ruin his good name so he can get his wife out of jail. Abigail and John are similair by having an affair, and caring more about their reputation then the lives of others.

Abigail and John might have their similarites , however they have their differances too. Abigail lies through out the whole trail, accusing innocent people, and lying about witch craft just to cover her wrongful actions. Abigail's lies and her desire to escape punishment started the whole witch trials.
'' Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnams dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a wordabout the other things and I will come to you in the black of some terriable night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you''(miller 20). Abigail lies about what happens in the forest, and forced the others girls to lie as well. Abigail did not want to take a simple whipping so she confessed to withcraft. Thos, she escped the punishment of whipping and in her new found power, started accusing inocent people. Abigail has said made nineteen innocent people lose their lives. On the other hand, John tells the true about his actions unlike Abigail who lies through out the whole play. John tells the truth about having an affair with Abigail.''Where my beasts are bedded. On the last night of my joy, some eight months past. She use to serve me in my house, sir. A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything. I know it now I beg you- see her what she is''(miller
