The Future Majority

Today we all know that Caucasians are the majority of the nation, and it has always been like this since the beginning of the United States of America. In those days white Americans thought it was going to always be like that, but experts are now predicting that white Americans will become the minority of the U.S by 2050. The present minorities will become the future majority of the United States according to the Census Bureau. (CNN) As surprising as this might seem, this should have been predicted by everyone, once President Barrack Obama was elected. Two to three decades ago, who would have thought that the white majority would be a minority in the United States? Although many Americans think and have always thought that Caucasians are always going to be the majority of the United States, experts are now saying the minorities, as a whole, will be the majority of the United States.
In the 1950’s, the biggest minority was African-Americans by far. Now it is one of the biggest minority groups in the United States competing with Hispanics and Asians. Hispanics are also playing a big role in the United States. It is said in the near future, that Hispanics will be the biggest minority group amongst the minorities of the U.S. with blacks and Asians being close. According to the census, “The African-American population is projected to increase from 41.1 million to 65.7 million by 2050, going from 14 percent of the U.S. population to 15 percent. The Asian-American population is expected to increase from 15.5 million to 40.6 million, or from 5.1 percent to 9.2 percent of the population.” (CNN). With a lot of things factoring the U.S. population such as immigration, marriage, and also pregnancies, the population will continue to grow at a rapid pace. As Frey notes, the census found that the number of whites under 18 declined by more than 4 million over the past decade, even as the number of minority young people increased by more than 6 million.” (Suro) This just makes you wonder what it will be like in a couple hundred years from now.
The increasing rate of interracial relationships is contributing to the decline of the majority and the rise of the minorities. The interracial relationships are especially common between whites and blacks. A long time ago, black people were not as accepted in society, but now they are so accepted that younger people, whose race is not African-American are saying the slang word “nigga” to each other. With this kind of condition, it would be expected that you would see more relationships between blacks and other races such as whites. This kind of situation is probably factored by television, movies, and music since African-Americans play a huge role in those industries. Since young people are exposed to a lot of African-American related media, it would make sense that people are getting more comfortable with African-Americans. Hispanics also play a big role in the media that was stated. One way you can see that the Hispanic population is getting larger is the amount of Latino restaurants and stores increasing around the United States and this also goes for Asians since you are also seeing more Asian businesses. Immigration is a big contribution to the rise of Hispanics. Immigration is more likely the reason why Latinos are going to be the biggest minority group in the U.S. since the Hispanic immigration levels are the highest amongst all the other races. “Nearly one-fourth of labor force growth over the next 20 years will be from children of Latino immigrants.” (Suro). Because of the increase of Latinos in the U.S, Spanish is the second biggest language spoken in the United States and will probably be the biggest in a few hundred years. In schools you are seeing more diversity amongst students. Decades ago, most schools just had around 90 percent of Caucasians and the rest of the students were a different race.
