People, in different economic classes and places in the world can be very much alike. The story “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry tells the story of a couple who isn’t pleased with their economic status, though they make sacrifices to see each other happy. The protagonist, Della sacrifices her hair, something that was important to her, to see her husband happy. In addition, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant tells the story of an unpleased wife, Mathilde, whose husband has to go through rough times with her to pay for a mistake of hers. Mathilde and Della are both unsatisfied with their economic status, and they both act behind someone’s back, though Della was happy with her husband, and Mathilde wasn’t.

Della, in order to make money to buy her husband a Christmas present, acts behind his back: “”Finally, she found it. It surely was made for Jim and no one else.” Also, Mathilde acts behind her friend’s back when she says that she had broken the necklace instead of saying that she had lost it: “’You must write to your friend,’ said he, “that you have broken the clasp or her necklace and you are having it ,ended. That will give us more time to look’” Although the many similarities, Mathilde and Della have their differences. Whereas Mathilde wasn’t satisfied with her husband, Della was. This quote from “The Necklace” illustrates the fact: “She was an unhappy woman, like any woman who has married someone she thinks is inferior to herself.” In addition, this quote from “The Gift of the Magi” also illustrates the fact: “She had spent many happy hours planning to buy something nice for him.” On the whole, Mathilde and Della are very similar, but just like all the other human beings, they are also very different. Della has a loving husband who she loves back, Mathilde also has a loving husband who she doesn’t love back.
