In the story “The Gilded Six-Bits,” written by Zora Neale Hurston, Missie May starts out as a happy wife with a bold personality. As the story progresses, Missie May dreams of being rich, but a turn of events makes her realize that being wealthy is not all that it appears to be. Missie May is a recently married woman who loves experiencing endearing moments with her husband: “She had not seen the big tall man come stealing in the gate and creep up the walk grinning happily at the joyful mischief he was about to commit” (Hurston 944). Their relationship seems to be doing fine until her husband tells her about the new guy in town. Her husband explains how much gold he has and how all of the women like him.
