In Lois Lowry’s The Giver, Jonas lives in the Community. In the Community, everything is the same--clothing, skin color, type of family, and language. When Jonas is old enough to have a job, he is assigned to be the next Receiver of Memory. In this job, he receives memories of the past. He sees many good things, but he also sees many bad things. Through all of the memories that he experiences, he learns that love is the most powerful feeling of all, and without it, life is meaningless. When Jonas received the memory of a family’s Christmas celebration, he realizes what he experienced in the Stirrings were feelings of love. He learns that the pills he takes to stop the Stirrings also stop the feeling of love. He goes against what he is told and stops taking them. Because he stops taking the pills, the reader can determine that Jonas values the feeling of love and knows that it is very important. In the Christmas memory, Jonas finally learns what love is. “It had all been there, all the things he had learned to treasure.” The text is referring to all of the happy memories and feelings Jonas finds important, all of which were experienced in the memory.
