“All you need is love.” This was sung by The Beatles in 1969. Many artists have sung about the importance of love in our lives throughout history. In Lois Lowry’s The Giver, the main character Jonas learns about the importance of love. The book takes place in the Community, where everything is the same--clothing, skin color, type of family, and language. When Jonas is old enough to have a job, he is assigned to be the next Receiver of Memory. In this job, he receives memories of the past. He sees many good things, but he also sees many bad things. Through all of the memories that he experiences, he learns that love is the most powerful feeling of all, and without it, life is meaningless. He learns that the pills he takes to stop the Stirrings also stop the feeling of love. He goes against what he is told and stops taking them. Because he stops taking the pills, the reader can determine that Jonas values the feeling of love and knows that it is very important. In the Christmas memory, Jonas finally learns what love is. “It had all been there, all the things he had learned to treasure.” The text is referring to all of the happy memories and feelings Jonas finds important, all of which were experienced in the memory. Because Jonas experiences all of his happy and joyful feelings when he feels love, the reader can determine that Jonas enjoys the feelings of love because it compiles all happy feelings into one. Next, the narrator says that Jonas was “luxuriating in the warm and comforting memory.” This further proves that Jonas really liked the feeling of love and didn’t want it to end because he was luxuriating in its comfort, and doesn’t want to come out of his memory and back into his world without love.
