Title: The Giver – When I first saw the title, I couldn't imagine what would happen or who would appear because the title is only two words. But I noticed this short title has an effect that it can make the readers imagine just like it caused me.
Author: Lois Lowry – I've never read any works by her.

Some of them that I felt particularly are the importance of freedom, individual, and memories. In the community, there is no crimes, starvation, troubles and so on. So it is, so to speak, an utopia. On the other hand, they have many regulations and people never express their strong feelings. Therefore, in a sense, the community is a dystopia. That means there is no individual and personality. Because they ARE same. Since the community chose “Sameness”, they got security and stability. At the same time, however, they lost many important things they do not even realize. What they lost are definitely individual and the freedom of choices. What tells us the importance of the memories is the part of the story that Jonas receives the memories from the Giver for the first time. That tells us memories are not knowledges. Memories can make people taken action like Jonas does. What I learned from this novel the most is the value of emotions. People in the COMMUNITY don't feel fear, unpleasantness, and even love. Furthermore, they CAN’T feel them. Since they have never experienced ‘freedom’, they don’t even know the value of them. So there may be nothing more fearful than …show more content…
In my opinion, this novel is constituted to reveal gradually, the extraordinariness and the fear of the strange controlled society which appear peaceful at a glance, to readers and Jonas. And this construction was also effective for the suggestion of dystopia parts and I could understand these parts with the actions that Jonas tried to change such dark parts of the society. That worked for me with continuing on reading, and it promoted the understanding of the story better than other books for children. And I can tell this novel appealed on both emotional and logical way. The development of the story by Jonas’s emotions against the extraordinariness of the society makes the whole story emotional because the important things of the story is basically based on Jonas’s emotions. And that also causes readers to empathize with the main character and the others. On the other hand, it has logical appeals. When Jonas understands the true meaning of RELEASE, for example, he noticed that “things have to be changed”. So RELEASE is a fearful word and it’s described
