The community in The Giver is meant to be a place where everything is supposed to be done with serenity and perfection, but is living in a third world country like Haiti better than succumbing to ignorance is bliss? Many people say no, and that is a very true statement. The Giver is a story about a boy named Jonas who lives in a Utopian society with many strict rules and restrictions, enabling him and his family unit, along with many others, to succeed. Meanwhile, the short article “Haiti in Crisis” by Bryan Brown and Patricia Smith speaks about the different struggles people go through like poverty, corrupt government, and other desolate situations that make it an unhealthy place to live. Although most live with ignorance in The Giver, living in the community would be much more successful, ultimately making it the best option if given a choice. The community from The Giver believes in sameness. Everyone is entitled to every basic necessity to live. They are provided with three meals a day, means of transportation, and a dwelling, or home (Lowry). There has never been altercations in the community, nor has anyone ever felt a sensation that would feel that it is not a fit place to live. Everyone has what they need. Everyone survives. Meanwhile, in Haiti, forty percent of its inhabitants are unemployed, while sixty percent only earns two dollars and forty-two cents a day. Twenty-five percent of the citizens only earn a dollar and twenty five cents (Brown & Smith)! This causes the majority of people living in Haiti to depend on their own crops, which are hard to grow with their landfill-like agricultural lands that are filled with trash, seawater, and other debris. This makes Haiti nearly uninhabitable, hence why the community is a
