Every story portrays a lesson that we can learn from and use in our everyday life. “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein is a great example that shows many valuable lessons compressed in a small children's picture book. By reading this story we can see that; you have to face your problems; it is impossible to outrun them, we need to focus on what we need instead of what we want, and that happiness is a place between too much and too little. “The Giving Tree” seems like a very sad children’s book, but in reality it is a story that everyone of us can learn from. In order to see the lessons of this book, you have to really understand the meaning of the text and what the pictures represent. For example, this book tries to tell us that it is impossible to outrun our problems. The boy in the story comes to the tree near the end of the story. Once he was old, and had many problems. The tree wants him to play in her branches but the boy responds “I am too old and sad to play. I want a boat that will take me far away from here. The boy wanted a lot of things like money a canoe. In reality he didn’t need all of those things. He wanted them but he didn’t need them. If The boy would have focused on what he needed instead of what he wanted he would have been happy even if he had very little. If you look in the illustrated book “The Giving Tree” you could see that the little boy was happy in the beginning of the story. During this time he didn’t worry about what he wanted or about many other things he just wanted to have fun. Once he grew older, and wanted things, you can see that he started to look sadder than when he was little. Even once he got the items he wanted from the tree he still looked sad. If he would have focused on his needs the boy would have seen that he already has all the things that he really needs, and he would have had a better
