I agree with your characterization of motherhood such as generosity and love. Metaphorically speaking The Giving Tree is representing a caring mother. When we need help and support the first person to come on our mind is mother. Reciprocally, we pay give her back when she is in need. That is why we come back. “Swinging from the branches, sleeping in the shade” (line 3). A loving mother is always welcomes her boy, now he is an old man, with happiness and gladness. She treats him like a little even though he is a grownup. She checks about him with instinct or asking indirect questions and providing supportive suggestions.
That’s why she is “Oh, the tree was happy. /Oh, the tree was glad” no matter what (lines 6-7).An Eritrean saying goes as,
