The relationship between Jeannette Walls and her father, Rex Walls, is very dynamic. Throughout the memoir, the audience views significant events that highly impact Jeannette’s life. These are events that promote both a healthy personal growth and others that simply change her perspective on life and the relationships she has with those close to her. Although The Glass Castle has numerous life changing events, those that involve Rex Walls demonstrate a greater impact. We are able to view the father-daughter relationship within a family of many struggles. The progression of this relationship is shown all throughout Jeannette’s childhood, teenage years, and adulthood. Their relationship went from this resilient bond during her childhood to losing all respect towards her father during her teenage years. Jeannette’s adulthood had many eye opening events that made her see the good side of things. The man who had stolen and refused to provide much help to the family was now assisting Jeannette as shown “Hundreds of dollar bills-ones, fives, tens, twenties, all wrinkled and worn-spilled into my lap” (Walls 264). He came in handy when Jeannette was struggling to pay for her final year tuition at Barnard. This just goes to show how one may have bad habits but the intentions are still good. Rex Walls had a drinking problem all throughout his life which caused Jeannette and her family to experience numerous hardships but in the end he would always be there to help. The love in the father-daughter relationship had once again regained its strength that had been lost due to his careless actions.
