Society, an intimidating beast that many people choose to side with rather than fight against, conforming to the will of the majority like lemmings diving of a cliff. In the short story “The Glass Roses” by Aiden Nowlan, suggests that it is easy to assume position in line and follow the others, but only through craving your own path, may it lead to happiness. Stephan (main character) struggles with his desire to become a strongly, silent man like his father or to become an emotional, intellect like Leka. Aiden Nowlan demonstrates this theme through the use of simple characterization, empathetic conflict, and harsh setting. Fortunately for Stephan’s new found friendship with Leka, he is likely to be able to pursue greater opportunities outside
