It is believed that the Gospel of Matthew was written in the Greek speaking city, Antioch. Antioch has several synagogues (building’s where Jews meet for either religious worship or teachings); Antioch turned into the capital of the Roman region around 64 BC, and turned out to be the 3rd largest city in the Roman Empire by the 1st century CE. By 80 CE, the major religion of Antioch, was Christianity. However, it is also noted that there are a number of other places similar to Antioch that could have been where Matthew wrote his Gospel. It is thought that Matthew’s Gospel was written sometime before the end of the 1st century CE, after around 70 CE.
