The film The Great Gatsby follows the character Nick Carraway as he is thrust into a world of the upper class when he befriends his neighbor Jay Gatsby. He also bears witness to the reconnection of old lovers Daisy Buchanan, and Gatsby, which eventually ends in tragedy. The 1974 version and the 2013 version of The Great Gatsby have many cultural differences, including the display of sex, drugs and, alcohol, the way that they convey race, and the film and camera techniques that are used.

The 1974 version of The Great Gatsby is very conservative when it comes to the way sex, drugs, and alcohol are displayed. Throughout the film there are references to sex made, whereas in the 2013 version there are multiple references to sex, and in one scene we can hear two of the characters having sex in the background through the use of diegetic sound. Also, in the original there is only 1 or 2 kisses shared between Gatsby and Daisy shown on screen, while in the new version there are multiple kisses between Gatsby and Daisy and also Mertile and Tom shown on screen. The 1974 version of The Great Gatsby conveys people of other races as inferior to the white race, they even make references about white superiority, and interracial relationships are referenced in a negative way. There are only a couple of African Americans shown throughout the entire movie, and they were shown as lower class people. The 2013 version conveys people of color in a very different way. There are no references made about white superiority made, there are many more people of color displayed throughout the entire movie though they don’t have many major roles. The differences of races shown in each version of the film represent differences in culture, because in 1974 the Civil Rights Movement were still going on, whereas, in 2013 most people have accepted people of color, and they are gaining more and more
