America is known for the opportunities that it holds, that’s where the term “American Dream” comes from. Jay Gatsby, a farm boy from North Dakota was able to accomplish his goals, he became one of the richest men in New York. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby”, the author uses the character Gatsby to symbolize the American Dream, this suggest that the American Dream has died after the events of this book. Jay Gatsby has become one of the richest men in New York by himself, he did some things that are seen as unethical. Nick is an individual that Jay Gatsby has befriended, he came here with some money from his father. His father gave him enough money to start his life and business in New York, but after he gets established, he’s on his own. All men are not created equal, Gatsby is not equal with a man that picks up trash off of the street. That’s why everybody wants to come to America, we have opportunities that they don't have. The American Dream is a big part America, a great country to be a resident of. Gatsby’s death greatly reflects the death of the American Dream. The people that work for their money seem to die, whereas on the other hand, the people who were born into their money live a very prosperous life. This is very unfair, the people that have endured pain and suffering throughout their life are greeted with more pain and suffering. The people that are do nothing for their money live a lavish life, they did nothing to gain that amount of money, but life is not fair. That is where the idea that the American Dream died comes from, the fact that everybody who works for their money ends up dead or with nothing. The American Dream is dead because there is no more room for new people at the top, these wealthy families that have been at the top for a long time will stay there even
