The American dream of reaching a more full and happy life is what many people search for. Gatsby is living in the American dream by having all the money he could want but to complete his dream he had to pursue his love for Daisy. She is the last part of his American dream but she represents the harsh reality of life; things don’t end up the way one likes. It shows that through Daisy's trait of selfishness she destroys the things around her and only cares for herself. Daisy’s poor driving skills reflects her life. She cannot stay on a steady path just like her “relationship” with Gatsby. Jordan says that it takes two to make a accident; which is what happens between Gatsby and Daisy. An instance of her carelessness was when she chose to drive during a very confusing and overwhelming moment in her life when both Tom and Gatsby confronted each other. It should have been clear that she was unfit to drive and even when her mind thought normally she is still a poor driver. Her carelessness led to the death of Myrtle and thus causing Gatsby to take the blame for her. Again Gatsby cares so much for her to shield her from blame which only made Wilson take his life. She would not even own up to the truth of being the driver during the instance and does not even show up to his funeral. She is married to a wealthy man who has everything she wants; money, girls and the looks. She represents the “classy” East Egg families but in truth they can not even behave themselves. Tom is a known cheater on Daisy while she likes to play with Gatsby’s feelings. Unlike Daisy and Tom, Gatsby is part of the West Egg and works hard for his money. Daisy and Gatsby in a sense are like opposites. Gatsby is new money, and someone who is for the people; throwing grand parties where everyone is welcomed. Daisy on the other hand is selfish and greedy who shows the snobby part of rich people. Gatsby’s life goal is to be with his love Daisy while she looks for materialistic happiness. She wants the good looking husband, who treats her poorly, and has the big house and big money. Gatsby devotes his life to Daisy and becomes rich just to please her. She represents the rest of the wealthy families in the East egg and shows how with wealth one can be careless and that life is always easier with money. She does not have to work for anything like the love of Gatsby who works tirelessly to gain so little.
