Is it possible that the “great” Jay Gatsby’s personality could compare to his abundance of riches? In many of his quests opinions Gatsby, F. Fitzgerald’s starring character in The Great Gatsby, was changed by the riches he received. Little did they know, Gatsby still allows his “golden” personality to shine through the rumors. The gold within Jay Gatsby is enlightened by his extraordinary planning, seriousness in love, and disappointment in those who do not follow through with what he expects of them. Gatsby always wanted to get ahead, just like everyone else. The reason he made it when others didn’t was because he had a plan. The reader finds that Gatsby planned early when his father claims “‘Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves… Do you notice what he’s got about improving his mind? He was always great for that” (Fitzgerald 173). In this statement one can find that even when Gatsby was at his all time low he planned to improve himself just as much as he did later on when he began to do well in life. To back up his claim Gatsby’s father also shows Nick that on one of Gatsby’s books “On the last fly-leaf was printed the word SCHEDULE and the date September 12, 1906” (Fitzgerald 173). In Gatsby’s case this could not be more accurate. His love for Daisy can truly not be matched and he proves it time and time again in the novel. For reference, “He knew that when he kissed this girl… his mind would never romp again like the mind of God” (Fitzgerald 110). Gatsby knew the day he kissed Daisy was the day he chose to never let her go. Gatsby never planned to mess around with love. In fact Nick claims “Daisy tumbled short of his dreams… because of the colossal vitality of his illusion” (Fitzgerald 95). Gatsby seriousness in love even surpassed that of his one true love.
