“The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World” Social Change This story is quite interesting because of all the attention and emotion the women gave to a corpse that they could not recognize, yet there was some sort of connection between them and the corpse. There are many types of death that we face. In this story my analogy, is during the late 1970’s with introduction of trade in the auto industry of Japanese automobiles, companies like GM, Ford and other companies experience a fall in sales, the longevity and quality of Toyota, Nissan and other cars prove to be the catalyst that changed the industry in Detroit. Because the industry really never recovered from the lost financially. Remember two years ago Detroit filed bankruptcy. “While they fought for the privilege of carrying him on their shoulders along the step escarpment by the cliffs, men and women became aware for the first time of the desolation of their streets, the dryness of their courtyards, and the narrowness of their dreams as they faced the splendor and beauty of their drowned man” (Marquez). The value of the corpse changed over time, it brougth a life to a community that was blind to their own way of living. Not recognizing the potential of growth in their situation. In the story the village came to life when they finally buried the past, and planned for the future. Some families had worked for generation in the auto industry, it was time for a change, and sometimes we don’t see the need for change until we are faced with removing the seaweed, mud, grass swab, removing the underwater stones entangled in our hair and other debris.
