Anh’s story helps us to understand that becoming a refugee in a new country takes a lot of adjusting and help from different people to settle in. Living in a family that was not financially stable and couldn’t speak or read much English made it hard for his family of refugees to settle in. They had to adjust to life living in a new country because unlike their home country, Australia wasn’t war torn. For Anh’s family, adjusting wasn’t too hard as Australia provided a lot for them. Adjusting was easier than first imagined because if you were sick you got to go to the doctor for free and if you couldn’t get a job straight away, the government would give you money. Between battles with pirates, wild storms and the struggle of almost dying of dehydration, Anh’s family all kept going despite the obstacles being thrown their way. The second pirate battle was quite difficult for Anh’s family as they almost lost Khoa and Aunty Huong. The family was threatened as the pirates asked them for gold and if they didn’t get it Khoa would go overboard. With almost no energy left Anh’s father managed to yell out “we must save the child! We will fight to the death to save the child.” Luckily after losing most of their energy due to the life-threatening storm and the first excruciating pirate battle, the managed to have enough left to fight off the pirates and save Aunty Huong and Khoa. After going through this intense journey Anh and his family still found a way to appreciate and be grateful for the land that they finally arrived on. This teaches us that even though life can get extremely difficult, if you have enough grit and determination you can get through anything and be rewarded in the end. Anh’s family did this by putting all their trust into a German crew who eventually delivered them to a new
