The helping relationship is powerful; it is the foundation for change and solving problems. Consequently, it is important for case manager aides to cultivate an awareness of the diverse population we serve. Issues of culture, race, class, disability, age, sexuality, language, socioeconomic status and authority can create obstacles to effective communication and in achieving goals.

When I am working with a person from a diverse community, I address issues related to socioeconomic differences, educational level and gender.
By cultivating awareness, I can address assumptions I may have about the people served. In addition, understanding the challenges people face and communicating those challenges opens the door to a positive relationship built
