The term “hero” is used in a variety of ways depending on how people view it. A hero can be anybody, whether it’s someone to look up to or someone who saves lives everyday. A hero is not just born however, they evolve, as Ervin Straub stated. Oskar Schindler, an ordinary business man, risked his own life in order to save thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. However, it took first hand accounts of the ruthless murders committed by the Nazis for Schindler to set his incentives straight. This is heroic evolution is depicted throughout the movie based on Oskar’s life during the Holocaust, “Schindler’s List”. Oskar Schindler was born in 1908 in a very religious family. He grew up with a wealthy lifestyle until his family business went bankrupt in 1929 during the Great Depression. During this time of bankruptcy, Oskar Schindler set out to find work in Poland. As depicted in the movie, Schindler’s one and only goal at the time was to achieve financial success. His only concern was himself and his business, not the lives of the Jews. Additionally, he was an alcoholic and a ladies’ man. However, he remained focus on the task at hand: to run a successful business.
