Books hold a tremendous value, but when another person takes it and turns it into a film, a whole new perspective may be seen. A good example of this is when Peter Jackson directed the movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The movie was based on the book The Hobbit written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Hobbit is about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who is chosen to be the burglar of the journey with the dwarves and Gandalf. In their journey, they are going to the Misty Mountains to go seek Smaug the dragon, his treasures, and return back the Arkenstone. On this journey, Bilbo meets a creature named Gollum when he falls unconscious in a cave. This happens in chapter five, “Riddles in the Dark.” Gollum is an important character in the movie and the book who shows the differences between the movie and the book. Although the movie is based on the book, Jackson doesn’t follow Tolkien’s original intent in parts of the movie. Jackson’s changes in the Gollum scene were more effective than the book because Jackson use lighting and sound. He also portrayed Gollum’s feelings more effectively by giving him a certain body language and expression.

In chapter five, Tolkien says, “He (Gollum) was watching Bilbo...Bilbo could not see him, but he was wondering a lot about Bilbo, for he could not see that he was no goblin at all” (Tolkien,72).
