Ordinarily, some people believe heroes are people much alike to those written in comics wearing capes, while others believe they are everyday people. Furthermore, I believe heroes to have traits such as being brave and courageous, to have a desire to help a cause greater than himself. In the novel The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, there are multiple characters portrayed as the hero of the story, including Thorin Oakenshield. Although, I would like to argue otherwise. Conversely it is an often discussed idea, that Thorin should be considered a great hero. But this is something I don’t determine to be entirely true. To me a hero is someone who goes out of his or her way to help an individual or something greater than himself. By stating what I believe to be traits of a hero I have come to a conclusion that the character Thorin is not a hero. For he merely sent Bilbo to do everything that a leader should take upon himself to do. Thorin grew selfishly greedy with his abounding wealth and refused to help his friends and fellow adventurers. Nevertheless, I have spent a vast amount of time pondering the question and have finally come upon the answer. I have come to a conclusion, that the overall hero of the novel The Hobbit, is none other than Bilbo Baggins. Although he was, in the beginning a complacent, boring individual, he has flourished into a rather incredible human being. And I believe he could not have transformed into the person he is now if he did not go on the journey with Thorin and Co.
