Over the eighth grade year, my writing skills have dramatically strengthened in many ways. All of my process pieces demonstrate my development of my writing skills. However, my process essays about The Hobbit and the Thematic Unit shows the most growth. My essay that reflects on The Hobbit, is titled The Duality of Gollum. It undoubtedly shows my ability to effectively use feedback and self-assessment to improve my work. After receiving feedback my introduction said, “The Hobbit is a novel written by J.R.R Tolkien that takes the reader on a journey to learn about an unadventurous hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who travels on a treacherous path to the Last Lonely Mountain. By stepping out of his comfort zone and traveling on the challenging quest, Bilbo becomes a leader, learns problem solving skills, and becomes a benefit to the group. Similar to the novel, Peter Jackson’s movie edition of The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey begins with Bilbo, thirteen dwarves, and a magical wizard traveling to defeat Smaug. The evil dragon had stolen the dwarves’ treasures many moons ago. Along the way to Smaug’s mountain, the adventuring group faces many hardships and meets new characters such as Gollum, a diverse character who lives in an underground goblin territory.” Obviously, since I used feedback and self-assessment skills effectively, my writing skills developed and I was able to earn a much better grade on my essay. Overall I learned to effectively use self-reflection and peer feedback to make my writing more advanced. This was beneficial in the long run because I was able to earn a better grade on my essay.
