The Midwest is a bland, boring, lonely place, or at least this is what Debra Marquart’s memoir “The Horizontal World” hints at throughout the excerpt. She does this, not to explicitly point out the characteristics of the region, but to instead paint a broader picture through contrasting points, anecdotes, and history, that the Midwest is much more than square states in the middle of nowhere.
