“The Horse Dealer's Daughter” by D. H. Lawrence, is a story not just about the breakup of one family, but the possible beginning of another one. When Mabel Pervin and her brother’s, father dies their lives are left in disbelief. Mabel is put in such terrible situational in her life that she attempts to commit suicide by drowning herself in a lake. This attempt is short-lived when Dr. Jack Fergusson comes to her rescue and saves her life. This unbelievable act makes her believe that the doctor may really and truly love her.
Of the many characters of “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter” is the oddest and strange story of one of the protagonists Dr. Jack Fergusson. We first are introduced to Dr. Fergusson when he arrives to the Pervin’s house to leave his condolences to the family after the passing of their father. For Jack Fergusson this seems normal as he is presented as a caring, friendly, respectful man.There we are given the opportunity at the first romantic encounter for our two main characters. They lock eyes for a minute while they see each other in the house. To Dr. Fergusson it nothing to think about, but to Mabel Pervin that was a look of love and desire.

In the film version the first encounter of Mabel and Dr. Jack Fergusson is given a more dramatic and somewhat romantic scene. The short story scene of the first encounter seems as if a passing glimpse or friendly stare with a undertone of romantic tension. The other scene that was given a helping hand in the film version then the short story is the scene where Dr. Fergusson recuses Mabel from the lake and they confess their love for each other. This scene in the film is more realistic, heartfelt, and in the moment as are many scenes in the film that are not as well describe and depicted in the short
