Nancy Farmer’s dystopian novel, ‘The House Of The Scorpion’ takes place in a post-war strip of land called The Dope Confederacy. In the country of Opium, a drug lord, El Patrón, who wants to live forever. El Patrón creates a clone of himself and names it Matteo (a.k.a. Matt) Alacrán. Matt has to survive when he finds out that El Patrón only created him to harvest for parts. Throughout the entire book, there is the underlying theme that Family Runs Deeper Than Blood.
Even in the beginning, you see the theme of Family Runs Deeper Than Blood. The first person that is Family to Matt, yet isn’t blood-related to Matt, is Celia. In the very beginning of the book, Celia shows her compassion towards Matt as a Mother Figure. The evidence of this is, “Celia immediately knelt down and put her arms around him.

His name was Tam Lin. He is one of El Patrón’s bodyguards. The evidence that Tam Lin is a father figure is “‘Tell you what laddie. We’ve got something to celebrate. Let’s go on a picnic.’” This shows that Tam Lin wants to celebrate Matt’s wins like a father would. This shows that even though Tam Lin isn’t Matts real father, we would do anything for him. Another reason that I think that Tam Lin is a father figure and a huge part of Matt's life and can be considered family even though he is not blood-related, is “Matt already had books on wildlife, camping, map reading, and survival that Tam Lin fully expected him to study.” (Farmer, 113). To me, this shows that even though Tam Lin wants Matt to have the know all the stuff that he wants him to know, he has the kindness and caring to give Matt materials and help him to get new skills other than the skills that El Patrón wants him to learn (i.e. Math, Reading, Science, Spanish, etc.). All of this shows that Tam Lin is a father figure to Matteo Alacrán, and thus that Family Runs Deeper Than
