Why would anyone risk his or her life so others could keep theirs? Some of those who were saved might not even appreciate this sacrifice or waste their lives doing nothing valuable. Nowadays, the term “sacrifice” is most widely used when talking of soldiers or parents only. Although it is a precious value in one’s personality, a few group of people implement it in their lives. The Hunger Games are full of sacrifices. One of the life-changing sacrifices was when Katniss Everdeen volunteered to take her sister’s place in the 74th Hunger Games. In fact, she sacrificed her freedom and her possible future with Gale, her lover, for her sister’s life. Although she won the games, her life changed forever to a nightmare. After that one volunteer, sacrifice has become an intricate part of her personality that her only concern was how her family will stay fed without her because she was the sole provider in the family. While she had the chance to run away, she stayed and helped Peeta, the boy from her district, when he was injured in the games. Once again, she sacrifices herself, risking her own survival for the sake of others. Due to a rule change of two tributes being crowned winners if they are from the same district, Katniss and Peeta wait anxiously for the games to end in that they are the only survivors. However, a new role was revoked which is that there must be only one survivor to end the games. First, Katniss considered killing Peeta for a moment, but she could not do it. Hence, she immediately thought of a double-suicide with deadly berries. As they were about to swallow the berries, they were announced as winners. And yet that was another act of self-sacrifice.
