Most children in the world live in a good home, with access to food, water and an education. However, there are children who live in poverty and do not have access to these basic needs. Poverty is the described as “the state of being extremely poor”. Child poverty can and does occur everywhere, from third-world countries to small U.S. communities. There are one billion children worldwide that are currently living in poverty. According to research gathered by UNICEF, there is 22 thousand children dying each day due to poverty.
Child poverty can create a dystopia because it often times leads to starvation or prostitution among children. There are two main theories used to explain the formation of dystopias: structural function theory and conflict theory. This paper will use the conflict theory, which claims society is in a state of perpetual conflict due to competition of limited resources. Child poverty is also caused by dystopian societies, as seen in the novel, The Hunger Games. This novel takes place in a dystopian society called “Panem”. “Panem is split up into 12 districts. Each year, every district is forced to randomly choose two tributes-- one girl and one boy-- to fight in the annual Hunger Games. A fight to the death on live television” (IMDB, 2012). The districts are divided up by social inequality, District 1 is for the rich and District 11 is the poorest. In District 11, the adults work the fields and harvest food for the capital, but they are extremely poor and are suffering from starvation. All in all, the totalitarian government in The Hunger Games, causes child poverty, starvation and, eventually,
