An event in legal history that had an impact on me to pursue a career in law is the Christian-Newsom case. It had the most impact on me because it was local and it changed Knoxville and how we acted. We were safer with what we did. I was ten years old at the time and understood about what happened. But now that I am older I understand more clearly and want to bring justice into place. Christian and Newsom had been dating for a couple of years. They were on they were going on a date that night.
Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom were carjacked and kidnapped. They were being held captive in a house on Chapmen Highway in Knoxville, Tennessee. They were raped, tortured, and murdered. Newsom was raped and had his penis cut off while Channon was forced to watch. Later Newsom was shot and burned by the railroad tracks. This was just the beginning for Christian she was raped, had one of her breast cut off, and they poured bleach down her throat, while alive, to get rid of all the DNA. Also the suspects took turns urinating on her. Later she was killed and stuffed inside of a trash can.
The home was also used for a crack house. So people were coming in and out of the house when all this was happening. Therefore no one called the police or told anyone. Later five people were arrested.
Police immediately began searching for the renter of 2316 Chapman Street, a convicted felon named Lemaricus Davidson. Davidson had recently finished a five-year prison sentence for a previous carjacking and robbery charge. Law enforcement also sought Davidson's brother Letalvis Cobbins. By Wednesday, January 11, 2007, authorities had arrested Davidson in Knoxville; Cobbins and his
