The Importance Of Achieving Post-Secondary Education

I come from a financially needy family of five. My father earns less than thirty thousand a year and my mother cannot work due to her only being able to finish high school in Mexico and she takes care of us, her three children when we come home from school. We are a low-income family, but regardless of this, I want to pursue a post-secondary education and be the first generation of my family to earn a Bachelor’s Degree or higher. I would heavily rely on federal financial aid and scholarships to accomplish this goal. Both of my parents urge that I stay down in the Rio Grande Valley to study to save expenses like room and board, transportation, and necessities; however, they do not understand that the opportunities and possibilities to succeed are higher the more North of Texas I travel. I wish to attend the University of Houston and leave the Valley, where I currently live because I want to be able to experience a new way of life with the independence and responsibilities that come with it. If I am granted this scholarship, it will change my life forever, in comparison to how my life would be if I do not attend college as a result of my financial need. I want to become successful and not be obligated to be working paycheck to paycheck and having odd jobs in order to make ends meet. I want to be financially stable with little to no worries about bills and emergencies, and in this day in age, citizens need a Bachelor’s degree or higher in order to obtain any job. That is why this scholarship is crucial to me; not only can it decide my future career path, but also my daily life affecting my happiness, drive, motivation, and attitude towards the world around
