The Importance Of Diversity In Public Schools

Ever since I was born, I have lived in New York City, one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse cities in the world. However, diversity does not necessarily mean fairness in respect to opportunities and privileges for these various ethnic groups. I am a student at Stuyvesant High School, one of the eight specialized high schools in New York City. These schools are the most elite in the city, and I believe that it is a privilege to attend one. In order to secure a seat in this school, children must take an exam called the SHSAT. According to a recent news report, black and hispanic attendance in these schools have dropped to a record low. In my very own school only 9 black and 14 hispanic students were admitted into a class of over 850 students. So much for diversity. …show more content…
This exam contains information that is not taught in school, and requires additional external help. This unfair to many students that cannot afford to take these classes. While, there have been free study programs made for these underprivileged children, the number of black and hispanic people that even take the test continues to drop. The statistics I have just mentioned bring me to why I would like to intern with GO. I believe that education is a gateway to a better future. However, I have noticed that there is a correlation between wealth and academic performance. Generally, the more money a family has, the more likely their children are to be successful. This way of life is unacceptable. All people should have equal opportunity to make it big in life, through diligence and
