What does equality mean to this world, how is it used, and how is it kept? Equality is defined as the condition of being equal, or the same in quality, measure, esteem or value. For example, when men and women are both viewed as being just as smart and capable as each other is equality of the sexes. The United States is known for our freedom and equality. But there are regulations and bans on many things that separate certain people from being equal to the rest and allow discrimination. Such as bans on allowing same sex couples to jointly adopt. Some people don’t accepted same sex couples therefore they definitely don’t want them raising children. Some states outright ban lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) people from adopting, a vast majority of states are merely silent on the issue (Para. 3) Simply because some people fear that, homosexual couples are not capable of raising a child, many say that because of someones sexuallty it changes the way they parent. Some also feel that kids need parents of opposite sex to help them develop. Another fear is it could confuse the children’s sexuality and make them different from everyone else. In the Wisconsin State Journal article Couples seek protections law gives to other families: same-sex marriage. Instead of just allowing same-sex adoption most states only allow adoption by an individual who is gay or lesbian, as a single parent. Therefore the children lack some health benefits and death benefits from their non biological mother. Many of these young people expressed respect for their lesbian or gay parents. Lydia one of the teens that were interviewed says about her father, “I think that being a gay man is what made him so incredibly wonderful.” Others talked about how having gay or lesbian parents made them more open minded, an honest person and they find it easier to talk to their parents. However there were also some bad reviews but as Michael puts it: “My mother’s lesbianism had nothing to do with the way she raised me. She wasn’t there for me when I needed discipline or parental support… lesbianism was the excuse… but not the cause”(Para. 18- 28.) Many people may argue about how bad same-sex couple parents are, saying because that are gay or lesbian they are horrible parents.
