Some decisions are easy. Decisions about what we want to wear, or what we decide to eat for dinner, for example, are based on personal taste or preference. When we want to achieve a goal, such as earning a higher grade, we can decide to complete homework, make flashcards for a test, or ask for extra help. When our decisions affect other people, then we might consider other factors. We might wonder, for example, if the decision we make would help or harm other people. What is fair for me might be unfair to someone else. We might be tempted to make decisions that help us reach a goal, but are not based on honest, truthful, or honorable actions. The President, for example, might make a decision that lets us reach an important goal, like winning a battle during a war, but many people might be harmed. The President might decide that something will be good for the people of our own country, but it might not be good for the people of another country. Ethical decision making is when we try to make a decision that as fair and right as possible. We have to consider all of the people or groups of people who might be affected by our decision. We have to consider different points of view about whether the decision is right or wrong. We also have to think about how the decision helps us achieve our goals.
