In Frank Beddor’s The Looking Glass Wars, he retells the story of Alice and Wonderland. This book is unusual and different from all the others because in this version Alice finds herself living in heart palace with her mother and father, growing older and starting to learn more about her life ahead when a un-spoken about aunt shows up and destroys her mystical life, Soon Alyss fights back for her Queendom over Redd. Alyss Heart soon realizes her life back in England was never now forever in the wind. Over Alyss Heart’s life she has discovered that her Aunt Redd was never the warm and fuzzy type, but instead was a vicious curse. Beddor worked in so many themes over the story that all had such great significance. For example, considering family as a blessing or curse is relatable to the actions of Genevieve, Redd, and Alyss.

One person who shows the theme that family can be a blessing and a curse is Queen Genevieve. In the beginning of the book, Genevieve shows great love for her daughter and husband, and very well thinks they are blessings; but soon she realizes the curse in her family thinks the same way of her. Genevieve’s sister Redd is a curse and Alyss agrees. Genevieve has many blessings in her life in the beginning of the book including Alyss, King Noland and Hatter. Even if Hatter wasn't exactly family Genevieve trusted and believed that he could take care of Alyss just as well even better than Genevieve. Alyss and Genevieve both agree that Redd is a curse but, maybe on Redd’s side she agrees that they are a curse. Obviously we know that white magic is better than black which means Redd is better than the Hearts, but we all need to remember that both sides feel different ways.
