A teary eyed young girl stood in a black dress holding an umbrella, while the rain continued to fall around her. Before her was a coffin in which lay the body of her late father. Only a few weeks ago she had celebrated Thanksgiving with him, and had hurriedly told him that she was thankful for him. She had thought of it as an obligation to say so because it was expected of her. Soon after, she left to go back to college because she had to get back to her life. Getting into all the different clubs had seemed so important back then. It had felt so important to make plans with her friends, and going to every party had seemed like an absolute necessity. Whether it is when someone leaves us permanently or separates themselves from us in such a way that it is impossible to tell them how we feel. We never comprehend that something so terrible could ever happen to us until it does. And when it does, we spend our days wallowing in disbelief. It's easy to dwell on wishful thinking in such times and wonder if all our days have just been a dream (Poe). It is quite easy to be filled with guilt during such times and ponder why we cannot “grasp them with a tighter clasp”(Poe). Without a doubt, this is very hard to do because the person that has left was someone who has influenced our life somehow. It is easy to feel like we owe them something and now we will never be able to repay their kindness now. It seems like the one who has left was selfish; we remain alive to deal with it and “dying is easy. Living is hard” (If I Stay). But we can’t stay stuck in the past. The future awaits and it is necessary to keep pushing forward in this game of life. It is important to realize that the departed can have left their mark on the world, however small it may be. They are alive in the people they have affected, the places they had occupied, the joy and love they had spread. Their spirit lives on through that love, and "that's how we manage to survive the loss. Because love, it never dies, it never goes away, it never fades, so long as you hang on to it” (If I Stay).
