Should college sport athletes get paid like professional sport athletes? Some people say college sport athletes should get paid for playing certain sports such as football and basketball because it requires a huge amount of time and effort to play. While the other half of people believe that college sports are extracurricular activities that are only played for fun and as hobbies. This is creating a huge debate, throughout the world supporting whether paying college athletes would help more athletes make it to professional sports. This debate has been rapidly increasing since its popularity boom in the early 2000’s. According to Listland ( a sports news company) they also agree that college athletes should be paid because “paying college athletes would make the sport more competitive by the athletes working harder to earn a higher salary.” Listland also believes that “paying the student athletes would decrease their stress level, by the students not having to worry about where their next paycheck will be coming from.” These two statements that Listland suggests to the NCAA are mathematically correct because student athletes are constantly worrying about money and where they will earn it from. According to a new survey from the Ohio State University, 70% of nearly 19,000 students surveyed said they’re stressed about their finances. Six in ten students were worried about their tuition cost and day to day expenses. According to Listland (a sports news company) they argue why college athletes should not be paid like professional athletes for many reasons. Listland first states “college athletes don't need to be payed to play because they already get payment enough from sport scholarships, which covers the cost of living, $10,000 of in state tuition, and many other expenses .” This statement that Listland argues is debatable in many ways, but the main complication in this statement is that many student athletes do not get sport scholarships. Most student athletes are walk ons ( athletes that do not receive a scholarship from that school). Another problem in this statement, is that many sport scholarships do not cover a lot of the expenses placed on college athletes. Listland also believes “student athletes should not be paid because they are financially irresponsible, and most are piled up with credit card debt.” This statement is accepted by many reporters, but what do you expect these college athletes to know about balancing a budget? Most of these students have never learned about balancing a budget before, so these sources (such as Listland) should take this into consideration before saying they are irresponsible with money. These statements from Listland continue to be very debatable across many sport news companies and it will only continue to grow with this
